What is ChatGPT-4o?

ChatGPT-4o(And no, that’s not a typo for 4.0!)

In mid-May, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT-4o, the “o” standing for “omni” in a nod to the GPT’s emerging capabilities across text, voice and vision.

This new version is a significant upgrade for the original ChatGPT-3.5 that took the world by storm early last year. It also offers additional functionality to the paid ChatGPT-4 which has been available since March 2023.

Let’s take a look at who can access ChatGPT-4o, and what features are available.

Is ChatGPT-4o available to free users?

In great news for anyone not on a paid plan, ChatGPT-4o is available to both free and paid users, with the latter enjoying more uses per day, as well as access to DALL·E image generation, and an overall faster experience.

If you’re a free user, the system will now default to version 4o when you open up the ChatGPT website or mobile app. After you’ve used up your available ‘credits’ for that day (note they don’t actually give a confirmed quota or explain what “limited usage” actually means), the system will revert to version 3.5, giving you continued unlimited access on that earlier model.

If you have a paid plan, you will still see version 4 by default, but you can select 4o from the dropdown menu. Depending on which plan you have, you will be able to access around five times as many daily 4o credits as free users.

What can I do with ChatGPT 4o?

The announcement from OpenAI explains that users can now “take a picture of a menu in a different language and talk to GPT-4o to translate it, learn about the food’s history and significance, and get recommendations”.

There are several other exciting features, including the ability to:

  • Give it a memory (or take it away) – go into settings to programme the GPT with information you want it to retain or forget. This new feature is slowly being rolled out.
  • Upload files (pdfs, word docs, etc) and ask it to find and summarise relevant information.
  • Access custom GPTs for specific uses, e.g. Adobe Express for creating images or videos, or “Geeky Gary” for advice on all things social media!
  • Create graphs based on data you ask it to analyse.
  • Search the web with Bing to find information in real time.
  • Chat about images you upload, or ask it to create images for you (it uses DALL-E to do this – only available on the paid version).

Some of these features have long been available in ChatGPT-4 for paid users, but this is the first time they’ve been accessible to free users.  And of course, the new version can still do all the things the older ChatGPT-3.5 model has been able to do for some time now.  Here’s a previous blog to check: 8 ways to use ChatGPT for business.

Voice and video features coming soon

If you thought the list above looked exciting, wait until you hear what’s coming next!

OpenAI has demoed some incredible voice and video features that aren’t available yet, but will be rolled out in the future.

According to the company, the new Voice Mode will “allow for more natural, real-time voice conversation and the ability to converse with ChatGPT via real-time video. For example, you could show ChatGPT a live sports game and ask it to explain the rules to you.”

You’ll be able to use Voice Mode to have a conversation with the GPT at human speed – and you can even ask it to sing to you (can we suggest a rock song in the style of Bon Jovi?)!

If you allow it to use your camera, you can ask it to suggest outfits for interviews, or judge your emotions based on whether you’re smiling or frowning. A new feature that has small business owners enthused and terrified in equal measure.

Check out this video of GPT-4o guessing that OpenAI is about to announce it based on what it could see through the camera!
