It’s one of the most important decisions a small business owner has to make.
Which tasks should you do yourself and which should you hire someone else for?
Three Sisters Bake co-founder Gillian Reith talked about this at the Working Digital conference we organised for East Ayrshire Council. She explained how, as a new start, with limited budget, she took the decision to use her considerable artistic skills to design the logo for the cafè she’d recently launched with her sisters.
It’s an excellent logo, still in use today and has helped establish Three Sisters Bake as a strong brand. But Gillian stressed that photography was a different matter and an area where she felt doing it themselves was not an option and a professional had to be hired.
Your decisions will be different but the key is to remember that you can’t do everything, and some things matter more than others. It’s unlikely you’d put off a trip to a cafe because you didn’t like the logo, but if the pictures of the cakes on the website didn’t do them justice it might have a big impact on your decision.
Be honest about your existing skills and make use of them. This will free up money which you can use to hire people with the skills and expertise you lack.
