3 outside of the box digital marketing ideas

social media contentYou probably have a good idea of the standard set of digital marketing ideas: write a blog, update your Facebook page, send some tweets, do the monthly newsletter, etc.

But have you ever considered doing something a little more outside of the box?

Top 3 digital marketing ideas to make you stand out

1) Create a stop-motion animation

A quirky twist on the traditional ‘explainer video’, stop-motion animations are a fun way to grab your audience’s attention with offers, competitions or bite-size pieces of advice. These work particularly well on Instagram, which depends on creative visuals.

For a little inspiration, check out “Paper”, Honda’s Emmy award-winning stop-motion video:

A stop-motion animation involves shooting one frame at a time with physical objects moved between frames, creating the illusion of movement when the sequence of images is rapidly played back. Sounds complicated? It doesn’t have to be. Software such as Movavi, Dragonframe and (for Apple users) iStopMotion enables you to make your own stop-motion animations without any movie-making experience.

2) Start a Podcast

Podcasting is the Internet’s answer to the radio, and it can offer a low-cost, highly effective way for small businesses to reach out to their market. It can also be a much more personal way of communicating with your audience, as most people listen to podcasts through headphones when they have some downtime to pay attention to what’s being discussed: for example, when they’re commuting to/ from work or working out at the gym. This is a fantastic opportunity for your business to make one-to-one connections with your current and future customers.

To get started, you don’t need much more than a microphone and a means of recording, editing and hosting your episodes. As you’d expect, there are plenty of tools available that make it easy to get underway with podcasting.

But, what about the content? Think about what your audience wants to know. Perhaps you have a bank of blog pieces or guides that you could turn into podcast material? Are there any interesting guests you could interview? Do your research: listen to other podcasts from your industry, as well as successful small business podcasts.

3) Generate a meme

Granted, this is easiest for those running cat-based businesses, but what about the rest of us?

Humour has always been a great way to get attention and hold it. There aren’t many people who don’t enjoy a giggle, so think about which of your digital marketing ideas could be spun into a funny photo meme or a gif. Tools such as Imgflip and Giphy allow you to select from their media library or upload your own content.

Then, once you’ve made your meme, make sure you shout about it on social media. Funny works on all channels!

Tip: If you’ve spent any time on the Internet, you’ll recognise some of the most popular images used in meme creation (e.g. that Willy Wonka one that seems to be everywhere!). You can piggyback off established memes like this by pulling up the image from the library on Imgflip or similar, and adding your own text.
