Social media powers into top 50 UK online brands
Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011UK Online Measurement (UKOM) and Neilsen have unveiled a list of the top 50 online brands, with the results sure to be of interest to SMEs.
While the top 5 in the chart – comprising Google, MSN, Facebook, Yahoo! and the BBC – is largely unchanged, there has been a considerable growth in the presence of social media sites on the list.
In 2004 there was only one social networking site, Friends Reunited, was on the list of 50 but, now, 10 social media sites occupy the chart, reflecting the changing habits of internet users as well as emphasising the significance of this new type of web-based brand.
James Smythe, general manager of UKOM, believes that the growing presence of social media sites could be reflective of a shift away from people’s reliance on traditional authorities (for example, news or company websites), indicative instead of ”a growing acceptance by consumers of anonymous authority”. In other words, internet users are increasingly happy to put their trust in the collaborative content uploaded by fellow users, an age arguably heralded by Wikipedia.
“The web has always made it easier for people to socialise but the critical element of trust in social online environments has now become mainstream,” Mr. Smythe added.
