94% of mobile developers will be using HTML5 by next year

New research from mobile app development software company Kendo has revealed the overwhelming popularity of HTML5 technology. Their recent HTML5 2012 Adoption Survey, which reported the opinions of more than 4,000 developers in September this year, showed that a staggering 94% of developers were already using HTML5, or intended to do so by the end of 2012. Opinion also remained positive when the survey questioned possibilities for the future, with more than 90% stating their belief that their ability to work with HTML5 will be an important career skill over the next two years.

HTML5 is essentially a web design mark-up language, used for structuring and presenting content for the internet. As the name suggests, it is the 5th version of the software, and in fact, Kendo’s survey revealed that much of the popularity of HTML5 seems to stem from the fact that it is already familiar territory. 72% of those surveyed said that they favoured the software because of the ‘familiarity of languages (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)’, although ‘cross platform support’ and ‘performance’ were also frequented cited reasons. However, whatever the cause, the importance of HTML5 is set to continue to increase over the coming months and years. Are you already using HTML5 for your business’ web design needs?

HTML5 will be used by 80% of developers by 2015, says survey

3D character and percentage graph barsA new infographic from Uberflip has shown that use of new browser based programming code HTML5 is set to increase rapidly over the next three years. The informative document shows that 48% of developers are already using HTML5 – an impressive figure considering its relatively recent conception. In addition to this, the statistics suggest that up to 80% of developers will be using the software by 2015.

According to Uberflip, HTML5 is also going to have a big impact on the digital marketing industry. The key benefits of the software is that it is searchable, cost-effective, accessible, and importantly during the current trend for accessing sites from multiple devices, supported across several different platforms (including Google Chrome, Apple Safari, iPhones and iPads, and Google Android). These are all factors which could be particularly useful to marketers looking to optimise their company’s online offering. The infographic highlights the fact that big brands as diverse as the Financial Times, Ford, and Vimeo, are already using HTML5.

It seems that the prediction that the majority of programmers will be using the software by 2015 is likely to be accurate – the benefits of HTML5’s functions are undeniable, and likely to be of use to businesses of all sizes, in various industries, over the coming months and years.

HTML 5 – The latest word in web design

HTML has come a long way since its invention in the 1990s, but until recently has not supported video content. This is the reason that its newest incarnation, HTML5, is being received with huge enthusiasm by many business and web designers, as this is no longer the case, and video is now supported natively by HTML code.

There will therefore be much less chance of coming across empty black holes in the middle of webpages, and the requirement to download a plug-in when trying to access embedded video will be reduced. According to application develops like Kevin Sweeney, who works for video hosting site Vimeo, the need for these applications could potentially be eliminated altogether.

“We’ve needed to rely on third parties like Adobe Flash or Quicktime and had to embed this inside web pages. What HTML5 will do is remove them from the equation so this stuff is supported natively”, he explains.

Users of devices such as the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch will be principle benefiters of HTML5’s video hosting functions, as Flash is not enabled on any of the iOS platforms.

It seems like HTML5 is already quickly becoming integrated into web design on a huge scale, with a lot of companies choosing not wait for the HTML5 specs to be finalised and accepted. Many web designers are now using early “unofficial” versions of the code to deliver a webpage with complete video content to all of their visitors.

After the Highland Fling 2011

Hey folks, it’s Thea here again, ruminating about last Friday. You see, our designer Paul and I attended the rather erroneously-named Highland Fling 2011 Web Conference in Edinburgh! (Now, I know I’m only an American, so my geography can be a little patchy, but since when is Edinburgh considered the Highlands?)

I digress…It was an all day event, with an audience of more than a hundred attendees listening to half a dozen speakers from England, Scotland and a fellow American, too.

There we’re half a dozen talks on Content Management Systems (CMS), HTML5, the Apple Look, Accessibility and even a talk on Why Simple Isn’t. (NOTE: Link to slide presentations that I could find at the bottom of the page).

There were all types of people in the room, from designers and developers, to project managers and company directors – all with one thing in common an interest in Web Development.

I started building websites back in 1995, teaching myself HTML in notepad, moving on to tools like Dreamweaver and later CMSs such as WordPress (or our very on NSBuilder).

Over the last twelve years, I’ve worked for some of the top Web Development companies in Scotland, in a variety of roles, and one thing I’ve learned is how universal the communication challenges are in Web Development.

These “challenges” can be both internal (say, between designers and programmers) and external (for instance between company and client). OY! and don’t even get me started on the challenges of designing for clients with committees! (See Gary’s piece for .Net magazine on that subject!)

I suspect anyone who works in Web Development can relate to my assertions…

OVER THE WALL

One of the internal challenges is that programmers often work separate from the designers, and as was described at the Fling, the designs simply flung “over the wall” to the programmer – who then is forced to find a way to make the designs work from a functionality, back end sort of way. This can be problematic (particularly in larger organisations) as illustrated in the picture above. An example of a  busy (cluttered), high-tech, design that was passed over a programmer to code (in this case Remy Sharp, I believe) – presenting him with a nearly-impossible feat.

A way of bridging this gap might be for the designer and programmer to spend a little time, before the project has even begun, discussing the site’s functionality and frameworks. This, would likely, cut down in frustration and hair pulling as the “build” begins.

Incidentally – just because someone is an artist or even a good graphic designer, doesn’t mean they will be competent or even understand how to best design for the Web. (Thankfully our designers are good at all types of design work – print and web and everything else).

So again – a little time discussing the project before the build – might have save a lot of time (and money!) in the long run. (Note: If work is being done separately and remotely then Gmail chat or Skype video calls could be a solution for the two sides to “speak”).

In a firms such as ours, it helps we have no walls separating us, and we’re all able to work side-by-side, discussing any issues as they arise.

CLIENT AND COMPANY

Communication hiccups can also be common between the web development company and the client. Each side needs to be succinct regarding the scope of the project. It’s the client’s responsibility to have a clean, concise, technical scope (a lesson I’m still learning myself!), and it’s the company’s to work out whether that scope is logistic.

The issue here often is the fact that a technical scope is beyond the capabilities of a vast majority of clients. Most won’t have any idea how to write up a technical scope of what the site should be, or look like, etc. They tend to have rough ideas, at best.

The more a client articulate what the site needs to do, suggestions on how it does it, and the end goals, the better it will be for the programmers to help define how this can be done from a technical standpoint.

With regards to the design, if the client can provide a list of sites, that they do and don’t like, then it’s the far more likely the first draft designs will hit, or at least be closer to, the mark.

Both sides can often be guilty of expecting the other to be a mind reader and most of us aren’t psychic in that respect. So if you’re a client having your website developed, provide as much information as you possibly can.

WEB DEVELOPMENT IS LIKE A RARE ART FORM

In my career, I’ve worked on sites that cost a few hundred pounds, all the way up to ones that have cost a quarter of a million pounds, and, funnily enough, these challenges I’ve written above have been prevalent on all of them.

Having run my own site for eleven years, I’ve been the “client” who’s had her site re-designed and relaunched a handful of times in that period. Each time there have been hurdles to surpass in order to re-launch.

As a result, I’ve realised that seldom does the creation (or re-creation) of a site work in a cut and dry fashion, but rather it’s a dance of one step forward then one back – clarifying expectations and gaining understanding.

It can be a frustrating and sometimes painful process (on both sides) – but once that site goes LIVE, and the client is happy, we’re reminded of why we even do the job. That is because it’s a rewarding job (well, in most cases).

The Highland Fling 2011 – was a chance to not only meet with, but also to learn something from, people who share the same passion as us – namely web development and new technologies.

Though as I said, I’ve been in this New Media field for a long time, it’s constantly evolving for all of us.

We’re all inadvertently forced, in this fast-paced, game-changing industry, to continually learn and expand both our technical skills, but also our communication skills.

That’s why I love attending things like the Highland Fling. You pick up something at every event, seminar, conference or talk. It can be a tip, a technique, a website or business contact, but I don’t think there’s been one event I’ve felt was a waste of time.

So here’s to the Highland Fling 2012 – where we’ll do it all again!

HTML5 is now HTML

HTML5 is no more, the specification having been ditched just two days after the logo was revealed to the web design industry and the general public.

W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), the standards group that steers the HTML specification, launched the new HTML 5 logo to endorse next-generation web technology. But the WHATWG (Web Hypertext Application Working Group) – a related quality watchdog that broke from the W3C in 2004 – stated that HTML5 should just be called HTML.

WHATWG’s Ian Hickson claims that given the fast changing nature of technology – and the demands of the users of this technology – new and updated features would have to be added on a near unending basis, making more sense for the move to a “living document” that can be amended more easily.

Hickson said the WHATWG had wanted to alter the HTML5 name previously, but resisted since the tag encouraged advocacy aims. However, WHATWG decided to enable the name change after the mix-up caused by the release of the W3C logo.

In a blog post, Hickson said: ”The term is now basically being used to mean anything Web-standards-related, so it’s time to move on!”

Meanwhile, Ian Jacobs, head of marketing and communications at the W3C, has apologised for the confusion as a result of the new W3C logo. In a blog post, he said: ”Clearly the mixed message – ‘high visibility launch’ along with ‘not yet official’ – was confusing to some and caused others to feel slighted. I understand and apologize for that.”

The debut of Firefox 3

I have to say that I am a proud and happy user of Firefox, I keep it open all the time while I’m at work developing web sites, at home I never betray it with other when surfing the net, and I never miss the occasion to advice a friend to download it and start to use it.

Today, after one year and a half from the last mayor version,  Firefox 3 has been released promising substantial improvements.

Memory Leak issue
Probably the most well known negative aspect of Firefox is that after a while that the browser is running, it starts using excessively memory, this is know as memory leak. Fortunately in this new release the way how Firefox manages the memory has been improved and now it’s noticeable a huge difference in terms of overall speed.

User interface
A lot of work has been also done to improve the user experience adding new functionalities. It is more easy to access the bookmarks thanks to a new system of star rating, tagging and search functionality. The address bar is now a lot more flexible allowing users to use it not only to type in URLs but also to search websites already visited or search for bookmarks. The zoom re-sizes all elements of a viewed website (not only the text as it was in previous versions) this improves user experience for those with particular accessibility needs as it renders, scaled up or down, pixel perfectly, all websites independently from how they are developed.

Offline web applications
Switching Firefox 3 to “work offline” it is possible to use web applications without connection, data will be saved on the computer to be later synchronized on the server once an Internet connection has been detected. This is a new way how to use web applications and it is still in process of standardization within HTML 5 specifications.
