SEO in 2013: What is Google looking for?

June 27th, 2013 by Gary Ennis

search engine optimizationSearch Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a tricky topic for many businesses. Everyone wants to get to the top of the search engine results pages, but nobody wants to risk getting penalised in the process. There are plenty of articles which will tell you what not to do for SEO, but here are some ideas for what you can safely do to boost your efforts and stay in Google’s good books…

Publish high quality content

In many online videos, webmaster Matt Cutts has advised users to include plenty of high quality content in order to make their sites sharable and compelling – “if that’s your goal, we’re aligned with that goal, and therefore as long as you’re working hard for users we’re working hard to show your high quality content to users as well,” he explains.

Use relevant keywords

Stuffing your content full of keywords is a definite no-no, but researching which terms your customers are using to search for you in Google and including these terms within your website copy and meta tags is still a legitimate and sensible part of SEO.

Sign up for Google+ (and other social networks)

Google has started to pay an increasing amount of attention to ‘social signals’ in its latest algorithm updates, so if your company isn’t already social, it’s time to jump on board. Of course, its own network, Google+, is essential, but using other popular social media platforms such as Twitter could also help boost your position in the search results.
